South Africa’s Deputy Minister for Provincial and Local Government, Nomatyala Hangana, announced in 2007 that the annual 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign would be extended into a year-round 365 Days programme, aiming to reach vulnerable groups such as farm workers and rural and informal-settlement residents that the shorter campaign had struggled to engage. Among the previous 16 Days campaign’s successes were a postcard campaign and SMS fundraising initiatives that together raised close to R100,000 to help sustain organisations supporting women and children, alongside R1.6 million donated by South Africa’s Department of Public Enterprises and state-owned enterprises, with organisers also highlighting growing buy-in from traditional leaders and calling for more men to take part in the campaign.
