Report

The Cambodia Cashew Producers and Marketing Programme’s Community of Practice documents how a rural marketing information project built on SMS moved from an early custom system, the Electronic Marketing Communication System (EMCS), to FrontlineSMS, free software that turns a laptop and GSM modem into a text messaging hub without needing an internet connection. With SMS coverage reaching an estimated 85% of Cambodia, the project explored using low-cost, easy-to-install text messaging to deliver real-time market information to participants in agricultural value chains, working with FrontlineSMS developer Ken Banks and running workshops and trials in western Cambodia from September 2008.
