Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique and Zambia are the mobile phone markets to watch in 2007, says a report. These markets represent 78 per cent of total connections in the East African region and are set to grow by 31 per cent between 2006 and 2007 to reach a total of 24 million connections. Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea and Madagascar took the remaining 22 per cent. The report, by London-based research group Wireless Intelligence JV – a joint venture between Ovum and the GSM Association – also indicates that Africa is the fastest growing region of the world mobile market. Mobile connections passed 200 million in the first quarter to reach a penetration rate of around 21 per cent.
