Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, began notifying applicants of their admission decisions by text message from the autumn of 2005, letting students find out up to a week sooner than they would by mail. By the time of a January 2006 news report, 700 admitted students, 44% of the total, had opted to receive their acceptance news by text rather than waiting for a letter, with the university citing high schoolers’ preference for instant information as the reason for offering the option on its application forms.
