As usage of mobile services in Latin America has grown rapidly over recent years, there have been calls to impose more regulations and taxes on the industry. To demonstrate to policy makers the value of mobile services, the GSMA, GSM Latin America and AHCIET commissioned Ovum and Indepen to produce an objective assessment of the economic impact which the mobile industry has had on Latin America over the previous five years and the likely impact it will have over the next five years. The objective of this 2005 study was to give government policy makers and telecommunications regulators the information they needed to ensure that mobile services provide the maximum economic benefit going forward.
