Elephant Ptt

Article

A Business Daily Africa report describes a pilot Push-to-Talk on Cellular (PoC) early warning system, developed by Safaricom with the GSMA Development Fund, Nokia and local conservation groups, to help communities around Mount Kenya forest and Laikipia district warn each other about approaching elephants. Fifty trained scouts, rangers and landowners used handsets combining walkie-talkie and mobile phone functions to alert neighbours when elephants — part of a population of roughly 5,000 in the area — threatened farms and ranches, in a district with one of the country’s worst records of human-elephant conflict.
