A BBC News report describes a mobile phone application, developed by technology firm Voxiva with the GSM Association, that lets field health workers send and receive real-time data on disease outbreaks, patients and drug supplies using GPRS or, where unavailable, SMS. Trials of the low-cost, Java-based system were underway in Rwanda and Indonesia to help track diseases including HIV and bird flu, with GSMA arguing that mobile networks offer health authorities the fastest way to get accurate, up-to-date data from the field.
