Report
A bridges.org/IICD case study on South Africa’s Judicial Inspectorate of Prisons (JIP), a watchdog body that used an online reporting system to communicate with independent prison visitors and prison managers and monitor conditions across the country’s overcrowded prison system. Established in 1998 and funded by the South African government and later the European Union, the JIP’s system is presented as an example of ICT strengthening oversight and accountability in a sector plagued by overcrowding, poor sanitation and human rights concerns.
