Report
A pre-publication paper for the Asian Journal of Communication by Jonathan Donner of Microsoft Research India and Camilo Andres Tellez of the London School of Economics, ‘Mobile Banking and Economic Development: Linking Adoption, Impact, and Use’, highlights a gap in scholarly research on how m-banking and m-payment systems are actually used. Drawing on exploratory fieldwork with small enterprises in urban India, the paper argues that contextual research into use is a critical but underexplored input to studies of adoption and impact, and identifies three cross-cutting themes — amplification versus change, simultaneous causality, and a multi-dimensional definition of trust — for future research.
