Mobile E-IMCI is a PDA-based job aid, developed by D-Tree International and Dimagi with the University of Washington, that guides rural health workers in Tanzania step by step through the WHO’s Integrated Management of Childhood Illness protocol for children aged two months to five years. Field tested at a dispensary in Mtwara, the tool improved clinicians’ adherence to the required diagnostic checks from 61% under conventional practice to 84.7% when using e-IMCI, without slowing consultations down, and all four participating clinicians said they preferred it to the standard IMCI chart book. Training took less than 20 minutes, after which health workers were able to train each other.
