MTN launched its Mobile Money Transfer service, MTN MobileMoney, in Uganda in 2009, letting subscribers send money, buy airtime and pay bills from their cellphones whether or not they hold a bank account, with non-subscribers able to receive and send funds through a network of agents. The Uganda launch followed pilots run since October 2008 across MTN’s West and Central Africa operations in Cameroon, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria, with further pilots in Benin, Congo Brazzaville, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry and Liberia, each developed in partnership with local banks to meet financial services regulations ahead of a planned rollout across MTN’s other African and Middle Eastern markets.
