Report
AESSIMS (Acute Encephalitis Syndrome Surveillance Information Management System) is a disease surveillance tool developed by Voxiva with PATH and the Government of Andhra Pradesh to track Japanese encephalitis, a mosquito-borne disease that kills around 30% of those it infects and leaves many survivors with long-term neurological damage. Piloted from 2004 in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, where the disease is endemic in 12 of 23 districts, the system lets front-line health workers report suspected and confirmed cases by phone or any internet-connected device, feeding a real-time, GIS-mapped view of disease spread that helps officials target resources, monitor outbreaks and coordinate a faster public health response than the area’s limited infrastructure would otherwise allow.
