An IDG News Service/PC World column by Ken Banks profiles Question Box, an intercom-style device developed by entrepreneur Rose Shuman that lets villagers in rural India press a button to speak with a live operator who searches the internet on their behalf. Banks traces the project from its 2007 pilot in Phoolpur village near New Delhi through to the launch of “World Wants to Know,” a site showing the real-time questions being asked through the system, and argues it offers a low-literacy, low-cost alternative for reaching people the mainstream web can’t.
