Project
PeaceNet Kenya runs an SMS Centre, known internally as the ‘Nerve Centre’, that gathers peace and security information from more than 100 field monitors spread across Kenya via SMS, feeding regular updates to peace-building partners and organisations. The service proved its value during Kenya’s 2007 post-election violence, when a ban on live media coverage left the SMS network as one of the most reliable channels for tracking and sharing what was happening on the ground, complementing PeaceNet’s other work strengthening government-civil society partnerships and building local capacity for conflict prevention and peace-building across the country’s regions.
