An Internews Europe report, ‘The Promise of Ubiquity’, examining mobile phones as a media platform across the Global South, produced by John West with support from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Drawing on case studies including Ken Banks of FrontlineSMS, Voxiva’s Paul Meyer, and mobile media practitioners in the Philippines and elsewhere, the report finds mobile had come to match television’s reach across the South by 2008 and sets out how southern media organisations could build text and voice services around it, from newsgathering to audience participation.
