The Scottish Qualifications Authority piloted sending exam results by text message to around 60 pupils at four schools in Scotland’s Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland in 2005, aiming to get results to remote island students a little earlier than by post. Pupils taking part, including students at Anderson High School, Kirkwall Grammar School, the Nicholson Institute and Portree High School, had to reply ‘yes’ to an initial message before their results, using agreed text abbreviations for subjects and grades, would be sent, and the SQA said it would gather feedback from participants before deciding whether to extend the service more widely.
