An Inter Press Service report on a Zambian health ministry pilot using SMS to send infant HIV test results from a central laboratory back to rural clinics within three to five days, down from delays of up to ten weeks. Piloted in the Copperbelt province’s Chipulukuso rural health centre, the system aims to get HIV-positive infants under 18 months onto antiretroviral treatment far sooner, with the health ministry’s Victor Munkonka hopeful that national rollout could cut infant mortality by more than half.
