A Guardian report describes how Josh Nesbit, then a Stanford undergraduate, partnered with FrontlineSMS founder Ken Banks to build FrontlineSMS:Medic, a text-messaging system connecting St Gabriel’s Hospital in Namitete, Malawi, to its network of 450 community health volunteers spread across 700 villages. In its first five months the roughly $500 system helped secure emergency care for 130 patients who would otherwise have gone unseen, doubled the caseload the hospital’s tuberculosis officer could manage, and saved staff an estimated $5,000 a year each in fuel costs.
