A Telegraph report on a world-first Western Australian trial that tagged more than 70 great white sharks with acoustic transmitters linked to a text-messaging alert system, warning beach lifesavers, wildlife officials and scientists within two minutes whenever a tagged shark swims within 500 metres of Perth’s metropolitan beaches. Eighteen seabed receivers installed since May 2009 had by the time of reporting detected tagged sharks on four occasions, in what the Department of Fisheries described as the first operational use of this real-time tracking technology anywhere in the world.
