Africa: The Impact of Mobile Phones

Report

The third paper in Vodafone’s Policy Paper Series, published in March 2005, on the economic and social impact of mobile phones in Africa. It notes that the continent had around 6.1 mobile subscribers per 100 people at the end of 2003, with more than 51 million subscribers in total. The paper draws on an econometric study by Waverman, Meschi and Fuss estimating that ten extra mobile phones per 100 people could add about 0.59 per cent to per-capita GDP growth in low-income countries, and reports on surveys of mobile use carried out in South Africa, Tanzania and Egypt.
