In many countries, including China and Japan, SMS alerts are being used to warn subscribers of emergency situations. Although these projects are in the early stages (with delays due mainly to privacy issues), it seems as though they will be promising in the arena of emergency relief. At the same time, a Tsunami warning hoax in Malaysia pointed out another potential flaw in the system.
