A CNN report by Shantelle Stein on CyberTracker, a GPS-based handheld system adopted in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, which covers around two million hectares. The device uses icons, including about 40 animal symbols, so that rangers who cannot read can record sightings and behaviour; each entry is automatically located, uploaded daily and added to a central database monthly. The data helps monitor endangered species, poaching and disease outbreaks, and rangers say it helps them patrol more evenly. The system was developed by tracking expert Louis Liebenberg more than eight years earlier.
