Dr Math Mxit

Article

ITWeb reports on a pilot in which South Africa’s Department of Education uses the Mxit instant-messaging platform to deliver maths tutorials. About 260 Grade 10 learners from six schools in Gauteng, North West and the Western Cape take part in what Mxit calls the Dr Maths Project, developed with the Meraka Institute over two years. Learners receive multiple-choice questions on a dedicated channel, and teachers can follow how they work through problems. Nokia provides handsets and airtime, Safipa, a funding portal managed by the Finnish Embassy, is also involved, and the longer-term aim is for government to fund the service if the pilot succeeds.
