Green Power Sri Lanka

Article

A Sri Lankan newspaper report on a GSMA trial with Dialog Telekom to build ten base stations powered by solar and wind energy, five off-grid and five on-grid, as part of the GSMA’s Green Power for Mobile programme. Nine vendors supplied equipment, and the stations were expected to save up to 109,000 litres of diesel and 294 tonnes of carbon emissions a year. The programme, backed by 25 mobile operators, aims to bring renewable power to 118,000 off-grid base stations in developing countries by 2012, up from fewer than 2,000 at the time. Results were due to be published later in 2009.
