HazInfo Sri Lanka

Project

A LIRNEasia press release on the Last Mile Hazard Warning (HazInfo) project in Sri Lanka, a 32-village pilot run with the community organisation Sarvodaya and funded by Canada’s IDRC. The project tested ways of getting warnings to remote communities, including remotely activated satellite radios developed with WorldSpace and mobile handsets that sound alarms and send multilingual alerts using the Common Alerting Protocol. It also looked at how organisational strength, training and women’s participation reduce disaster risk. The release marks the completion of the pilot and a dissemination workshop at BUET in Bangladesh in October 2007.
