Report
A chapter by Roxana Barrantes of the Instituto de Estudios Peruanos, from the book Communication Technologies in Latin America and Africa. Using evidence from the areas around two rural markets in Puno, Peru, where livestock husbandry matters more than crops, it examines how rural producers use mobile phones and, econometrically, what effect their use has had on farm profits. It also notes that many people use rather than subscribe, because street vendors offer mobile calls much like public phones.
