Obopay

Project

The Grameen-Obopay Bank A Billion Initiative, announced in August 2008, paired mobile payments company Obopay with Grameen Solutions to deliver affordable mobile banking, including cross-border remittances, money transfer, payments, savings and credit, to a billion of the world’s poorest people by 2018. The partnership planned to launch first in Mumbai, India and in Bangladesh in October 2008, building on the observation that even people with no access to basic financial services in the most remote areas often already owned a mobile phone, and drew public backing from Grameen founder and Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus.
