Open Data Kit

Article

A University of Washington news story on Open Data Kit, a free suite of tools built on Google’s Android platform that turns cell phones into data-collection devices, able to capture photos, GPS positions and barcodes and upload them over the cellular network. Early users include the Grameen Foundation’s evaluation of a Ugandan text-message information service, D-Tree International in Tanzania, and UC Berkeley’s Human Rights Center in the Central African Republic. The largest deployment was planned for Kenya’s AMPATH HIV programme, starting with 100 phones by the end of 2009 and eventually reaching 300. The work was funded by Google.org.
