Project Masiluleke

Article

A Global Voices report on Project Masiluleke, announced at Pop!Tech in late October 2008 as a South African campaign using mobile phones to encourage HIV and TB testing and treatment. Built on the ‘Please Call Me’ messaging service, it planned to send around a million free messages a day for a year, inviting recipients to phone HIV and TB call centres privately. Partners included iTeach, the Praekelt Foundation, frog design, Nokia Siemens Networks and the National Geographic Society. Organisers reported that early tests tripled daily calls to the national AIDS helpline in Johannesburg, and said later phases would add home testing kits and virtual call centres.
