Sms Server

Project

A free toolkit that allows any PC and a Windows Mobile 5 phone to become an SMS server has been released after a trial that brought significant costs savings to a sugarcane cooperative. The toolkit was developed in a project from Microsoft Research India (MSR India) set up to research a number of areas, including computing technologies for emerging markets. The project is underway in a village in the state of Maharashtra, India. The sugarcane cooperative in Warana serves about 70,000 farmers across 75 villages and in 1998 the Indian and state Government launched a PC based project to enable farmers to buy fertilizer, check their payment history and register their land.
