What Makes a Successful Mobile Money Implementation? Learnings from M-PESA in Kenya and Tanzania

Report

An 11-page GSMA paper from 2009 by Camner, Sjöblom and Pulver comparing M-PESA’s very different fortunes in Kenya and Tanzania. Kenya’s service had about seven million customers and 10,000 agents, against roughly 280,000 customers and 1,000 agents in Tanzania. The paper sets these figures beside differences in income, with GDP per capita of about US$890 in Kenya against US$520 in Tanzania, and draws out learnings on what makes a successful mobile money implementation.
