Background on the Mobile Phone Partnership Initiative (MPPI), a Basel Convention partnership between governments, mobile phone manufacturers and the Convention Secretariat to promote the environmentally sound management of used and end-of-life mobile phones. Launched in 2002, it produced technical guidelines covering awareness raising, design, collection, transboundary movement, refurbishment and material recovery, and an overall guidance document submitted to the Convention’s ninth Conference of the Parties in 2008. The guidance was later revised and adopted by the tenth Conference of the Parties in 2011.
